Choral Scholarship at the University of Dundee

You will receive up to £200 per year (about 235 EUR), paid in two instalments spread over the academic year, as well as around 10 hours of free singing lessons. The scholarship is valid for one academic year. It is offered by the University of Dundee in conjunction with Dundee Parish Church (St Mary’s), which is home to the choir in which you sing. There are four scholarship places, usually one each for soprano, alto, tenor and bass. This allocation may vary depending on the number and calibre of applicants.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled as a student at the University of Dundee.
• Voice: You sing well in a choir and feel comfortable in one of the four vocal ranges (soprano, alto, tenor or bass).
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Nationality: Open to all nationalities.
• Commitment: You sing in at least one university choir. You also attend Sunday rehearsals at 9:45 and the service at 11:15 at St Mary’s. More than two unexcused absences on Sundays may result in a reduction in your remuneration.

How to apply

Selection takes place during an audition in week 2 of the first semester. You will sing two short, contrasting pieces and complete a short series of aural tests. Please inform the music director of your two pieces in advance.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a small, highly selective scholarship: there are only four places, which are reserved exclusively for students enrolled at the University of Dundee, and selection is based on a singing audition rather than on academic grades or supporting documents. If you are a confident choral singer in a particular voice type and can commit to the weekly Sunday services, your chances are good, as the pool of applicants is limited to musically talented students who are already enrolled at the university.
