Music scholarship at Royal Holloway

Whilst studying at Royal Holloway, University of London, you will receive £300 per year (about 350 EUR) as a direct cash payment. This award recognises outstanding instrumentalists and singers. You do not need to be studying music to be eligible; therefore, students from all degree programmes are welcome to apply. The university also offers a wide range of musical activities, giving you the opportunity to perform alongside other talented musicians.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are a Bachelor’s student at Royal Holloway.
• Field of study: Any subject. You don’t need to study music.
• What you play: You play an instrument or sing.
• Musical level: You must demonstrate a high standard of performance. Successful applicants will usually have achieved the top mark in the highest-level practical music examination, or an equivalent standard, at least one year prior to applying.
• Nationality: Open to students from the UK and abroad.

How to apply

Applications must be made online via the university’s music scholarship page. You must submit an audio recording of yourself playing. Instrumentalists must submit at least two contrasting pieces; singers must submit three contrasting songs. You must also submit proof of your highest musical qualification and a short letter of recommendation confirming that the recording is your own. The application deadline is 5 March 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

The award is modest in financial terms and tied to a specific university. Selection is based on your musical ability rather than academic grades or financial need, so the pool of applicants is limited to accomplished musicians who choose to study at Royal Holloway. If you play to a high standard and submit a clear, well-chosen recording, your chances are good. As you’ll be applying for a place at university anyway, you’ve got little to lose by giving it a go.
