University of Kent - Music Scholarship

What you get

You will receive up to about 1,150 EUR per year (up to 1,000 GBP) as well as one-to-one tuition in an instrument or singing from experienced teachers, worth approximately 575 EUR (500 GBP). Every year, the University of Kent in England awards around 15 of these scholarships to talented instrumentalists and singers. As a scholarship holder, you will join at least two of the university’s ensembles (music groups) and represent the university at events.

Who can apply

• University: You are a full-time student at the University of Kent.
• Study level: You are a student on an undergraduate or postgraduate programme.
• Field of study: Any topic is fine.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• New students only: You are a new student starting your degree at the University of Kent. If you are already in your second or third year of study, please apply for the relevant ‘Music Performance Award’ instead.
• Musical level: You play or sing at an advanced level, for example at the higher ABRSM grades or an equivalent level such as RockSchool, Trinity or an international qualification. You have genuine stage experience, for example in regional or national youth choirs, orchestras or bands, at performances, in solo recitals or in leading roles in musical theatre productions.
• Commitment: You are willing to perform in at least two of the University’s ensembles and to appear in the University’s publications and in the press.

How to apply

Please complete the application form (Word or PDF only) and email it to the music coordinator. The deadline for applications is Friday, 25 September at 9:00. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to an interview and an audition lasting approximately 7 minutes. Both will take place during the induction week at the start of the academic year.

How realistic are your chances?

Each year, only around 15 scholarships are awarded; these are tied to a specific university and require a truly advanced level of playing or singing. Competition is fierce, but the demand for advanced, active musicians narrows down the pool of applicants. If you are clearly playing at an advanced level, can demonstrate specific performance experience and apply early, your chances are good.
