About this scholarship

Department of Medicine Award

You will receive a one-off grant of up to about 4,200 EUR (up to £3,600) to cover the costs of your medical degree. The money comes from the University of Sheffield’s Alumni Fund, to which former students donate in order to support the Faculty of Medicine. The number and amount of these grants vary from year to year, depending on how much the donors contribute.

Who can apply

  • Degree level: You are a student on a first-cycle degree programme (Bachelor’s degree).
  • Field of study: You’re studying medicine.
  • University: You’re studying at the University of Sheffield in the UK.
  • Financial need: Your household income is around £50,000 or less. This is confirmed by the means test carried out by Student Finance in the United Kingdom, which officially verifies your family’s income.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

You do not need to submit an application. The university’s financial support team will review your income details. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you will receive an invitation by email sent to your university email address. A panel of senior staff will then select the scholarship recipients. They will take into account why you chose Sheffield, how the funding would help you, and what your future plans are.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is narrowly targeted: only medical students from Sheffield with a household income of approximately £50,000 or less are invited to apply, so the target group is small. If you meet the criteria, you do not need to carry out your own research or apply – the university will contact you. Your chances will then depend on you explaining clearly and honestly why you are studying medicine and how the grant would help you.
