Richard Hughes Scholarship

During your first year at Bangor University in Wales, you will receive a one-off payment of about 1,725 EUR (£1,500), which will be paid out at the end of November. This induction grant is awarded by Bangor University. It was established in 1904 in accordance with the will of Richard Hughes of Llanfwrog, Anglesey, to support students from North Wales.

Who can apply

• University: You are starting a Bachelor’s degree at Bangor University.
• Study phase: You must submit your application before you start your degree as a first-year student.
• Where you are from: You were born in, or live in, one of the counties of Anglesey, Conwy or Gwynedd in North Wales.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may apply, provided they meet the requirement regarding their origin in North Wales.

How to apply

Please complete the application form for the university’s admission scholarships. The application period begins on 8 October and ends on 30 January. You will then sit a written examination in a subject of your choice at your own school or university in February. Choose a subject that is closely related to the degree programme you wish to study.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is restricted to students who were born in, or live in, Anglesey, Conwy or Gwynedd and are commencing a degree programme at Bangor; consequently, the target group is small and there are few applicants. If you meet these criteria, your result in the entrance examination will determine whether you are awarded the scholarship, as the scholarships are awarded to the top-performing candidates. Please note that this award is not presented every year.
