Rob Stringer Music Scholarship

Whilst studying for a BMus (Hons) in Popular Music at Goldsmiths, University of London, you will receive approximately 4,600 EUR per year (12,000 GBP over the entire duration of your studies, paid in three annual instalments of approximately 4,000 GBP each). This money is available to help cover your study costs. Previous scholarship recipients have used it for rent, utility bills and food, or for additional music lessons outside the university, such as singing or piano lessons. The scholarship was established by Rob Stringer, a Goldsmiths graduate and CEO of Sony Music Entertainment, to support music students.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are starting the 1 academic year of the ‘BMus (Hons) Popular Music’ degree programme at Goldsmiths, University of London.
• Nationality or residence: You are a British national or have been living in the United Kingdom for at least five years.
• Talent: You can demonstrate your academic potential and your musical talent.
• Financial need: You are eligible if your household income is 25,000 GBP or less.

How to apply

Applications should be submitted by email to the Music Office. Please send a completed application form, a personal statement and at least one reference, and state your household income on the form. The application deadline is 31 August. Students will be notified of the award of the scholarship on the induction day, once they have commenced their degree programme.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined. Only new students studying ‘Popular Music’ at Goldsmiths College who meet the residency requirement are eligible to apply, so the pool of eligible candidates is small. Only a few scholarships are awarded each year, with priority given to applicants on lower incomes. If you clearly meet these criteria and can demonstrate both financial need and musical talent, your chances are good.
