University of Bristol - St Mary Redcliffe Choral Scholarship

What you get

As a professional section leader, you will receive a salary. Section leaders are the singers (soprano, alto, tenor or bass) who lead the voluntary choir, whilst wearing robes, at St Mary Redcliffe Church in Bristol. This is a paid singing role and not a monthly stipend. The University of Bristol offers this post in partnership with the church. The level of the salary is set by the church, not by the university. In addition to the pay, you will sing a wide repertoire of Anglican church music with an established choir near the university.

Who can apply

• University: You are a full-time student at the University of Bristol or have been offered a place there.
• Level: You are a student on an undergraduate or postgraduate programme.
• Field of study: Any subject. You don’t necessarily have to take music.
• Singing skill: As a talented singer, you can lead a group and read music at first sight.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

First, apply for your place at university via the standard UCAS route. Once your place has been confirmed, apply for the choir scholarship. You will find details of the salary and the requirements for the post on the Church’s job vacancies page.

How realistic are your chances?

This role is very specific. You must be a full-time student at the University of Bristol and a confident singer who can sing from sheet music – so only a few people are eligible. If you sing well in one of the four vocal ranges and meet the university’s requirements, your chances are good. There is one place available per voice type, so apply as soon as your place at university has been confirmed.
