Barto Dos Santos Memorial Award

For outstanding achievement in your final year at the Slade School of Fine Art, which is part of University College London (UCL) in the United Kingdom, you will receive a one-off prize of about 5,800 EUR (£5,000). This is paid as a one-off sum rather than a monthly scholarship. Max Werner, a former student of the Slade School, established the prize in memory of Bartolomeu dos Santos, who headed the school’s Printmaking Department for decades.

Who can apply

• University: You are studying at the Slade School of Fine Art at UCL.
• Study phase: You are in the final year of your MA or MFA degree in Fine Art.
• Field of study: Every field of the visual arts is taken into account, including painting, sculpture and media art.
• Achievement: You have performed exceptionally well in your final year.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. The Slade School selects the winner internally through a nomination process, based on your work during your final year of study.

How realistic are your chances?

You cannot apply for this prize, so you cannot directly improve your chances of winning it. It is awarded to a student whose final dissertation stands out in particular and who is selected by the university. The only way to be considered is to be enrolled on a Master’s or MFA programme at the Slade and to achieve outstanding results.
