About this scholarship

Mackinnon and Tavella Stewart Scholarships

You will receive a needs-based grant from Magdalen College, University of Oxford. There is no fixed amount. The College will assess your personal circumstances and determine an amount intended to help cover your costs. The award runs for one year to start with. It may be extended following a review. It is aimed at PhD students with significant research potential who have applied for other funding but have been unsuccessful.

Who can apply

  • Where you studied: You completed your first degree (a Bachelor of Arts) at Magdalen College, Oxford.
  • Level: You are now starting your Master’s degree.
  • Research potential: You’ve got real potential in research.
  • Financial need: You have applied for funding from other sources but have not received it.
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via Magdalen College’s internal application form.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined. Only students who have obtained their first degree directly at Magdalen College are eligible, so the target group is very small and there are only a few applicants competing for the scholarship. If you completed your bachelor’s degree there, are now moving into research, and can demonstrate that you have unsuccessfully sought funding elsewhere, your chances are good. The scholarship acts as a safety net for outstanding Magdalen graduates who have no other options left.
