The Janice Ann McNaughton Bursary

During your first year of the BSc (Hons) Nursing (Mental Health) degree programme at the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield, you will receive a one-off payment of approximately EUR 3,500 (GBP 3,000). Each year, the university selects two first-year students from this programme. You can also apply for the NHS Learning Support Fund, a non-repayable government grant of at least approximately EUR 5,800 (GBP 5,000) per year. This grant amounts to approximately 2,300 euros (2,000 GBP) for childcare and up to approximately EUR 3,500 (GBP 3,000) should you find yourself in unexpected financial hardship.

Who can apply

• Course: You will be starting the Bachelor’s degree programme (BSc (Hons)) in ‘Nursing (Mental Health)’ (UCAS code B701) at the University of Hertfordshire.
• Year: You’re in your first year.
• Background: You are between 18 and 24 years old and grew up in the care system (for example, in a foster family or a children’s home). If fewer than two applicants meet these criteria, students under 25 who are the first in their family to undertake a degree course may be considered.
• Residence: You are a UK (domestic) student studying in the UK.

How to apply

You will need to complete a short application form for the scholarship. The university does not specify a fixed application deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

As only two of these scholarships are awarded each year on this degree programme, the level of competition depends on how many first-year students with nursing experience enrol. The criteria are narrowly defined: a specific degree programme, a specific age group and a background in nursing or as a first-time student. This keeps the pool of eligible applicants small. If you clearly meet these conditions, your chances are good.
