What the Music Scholarship gives you

You will receive a one-off grant of 575 EUR (£500) for the academic year 2025/26 to help fund music lessons, regardless of whether you play an instrument or sing. If you play two instruments, you can split the amount between lessons for both instruments or apply to use it for sheet music or equipment instead. As well as the funding, you’ll be given performance opportunities at ‘Soundbites’, the lunchtime concert series at the Attenborough Arts Centre. You’ll also be introduced to the university’s music societies and given support in finding free rehearsal spaces. The scholarship is administered by the University of Leicester’s Attenborough Arts Centre in collaboration with its volunteer Head of Student Music.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled at the University of Leicester in the UK.
• Level: You are a student on an undergraduate or postgraduate programme.
• Field of study: Any subject, not just music.
• Music: You play an instrument or sing, whatever your style or genre. There are no minimum requirements and no music certificates are needed.
• Commitment: You are prepared to practise regularly and take part in musical activities on campus, for example by joining a music society or performing as a soloist or in a group.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Please complete the application form and email it to the Attenborough Arts Centre by Sunday, 12 October at 23:59. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to a personal audition. You will perform two pieces with a total duration of around five minutes and answer questions about your commitment to music. Applicants with a disability who meet the criteria are guaranteed an audition.

How realistic are your chances?

Only students currently studying in Leicester are eligible to apply, and as the number of scholarships is limited, the pool of applicants is small but well-balanced. The jury is not looking for the highest technical standard. It aims for a balanced mix of different styles, genres and skills, so that a sincere, committed musician has a genuine chance. A clear commitment to making music and to musical life on campus is more important than formal grades.
