About this award / prize

Benefit

You will receive a one-off prize worth up to about 2,900 EUR (£2,500), awarded by the Department of Mathematics at Swansea University in Wales. Each year, the Department distributes a total of up to approximately 3,500 EUR (£3,000) amongst several prize winners, meaning that smaller prizes of around 1,150 EUR (£1,000) and around 580 EUR (£500) are also awarded. You may receive this prize in addition to the university’s separate excellence and merit scholarships, meaning that the funds are cumulative.

Eligibility

  • Where you study: You will be starting a maths degree at Swansea University in September, such as the BSc in Mathematics, the MMath or the BSc in Actuarial Science.
  • Study stage: You are about to start your first degree and are not yet studying.
  • UCAS choice: You listed a mathematics degree programme at Swansea as one of your UCAS choices.
  • Home student: You are a student from the UK (domestic student).
  • How you win: You get in by doing well in the entrance exam, so strong maths skills are what matter most.

How to apply

Please complete the application form for the mathematics scholarship examination and email it to the relevant department. The winners will be selected on the basis of a two-and-a-half-hour exam on 10 March. The exam usually takes place at your own school or university, although remote participation is also possible in this round.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is highly selective: only prospective mathematics students at Swansea who are from the United Kingdom can apply, so the pool of applicants is small. Everything hinges on a single exam, so a truly talented maths student stands a real chance, regardless of interviews or application documents. Practising with past papers provided by the department is the most direct way to improve your chances.
