University of Nottingham - Robert Ficken Scholarships

If you are starting a degree in chemistry at University of Nottingham, you will receive a one-off prize of approximately 2,300 EUR (2,000 GBP). The prize is awarded each year to the two best British first-year chemistry students. Robert Ficken established this prize to promote the study of chemistry. He completed his degree in chemistry at Nottingham in 1963 and later founded two chemical companies.

Eligibility

• University: You are starting a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at the University of Nottingham.
• Study level: You’re in your first year.
• Field of study: You are enrolled on one of the degree programmes offered by the Faculty of Chemistry.
• Fee status: You are considered a UK student, which means you pay UK tuition fees and not international student fees.
• Grades: Your academic performance up to the point of applying to university is a key factor in the award of the scholarship, so good grades are important.

How to apply

You do not need to apply. All eligible first-year chemistry students will be considered automatically. A panel comprising members of staff from the Faculty of Chemistry selects the two winners each year.

How realistic are your chances?

This prize is highly coveted: only two are awarded each year, and they are given exclusively to British first-year chemistry students at a single university. The winners are selected solely on the basis of their marks, so competition is fierce. If your marks are among the best in your year group, you have a real chance of winning, and you don’t need to do anything special to be in with a chance.
