About this scholarship
What the Catherine Williamson Travel Scholarship gives you
You will receive a one-off payment of around 700 EUR (between £200 and £1,000) to fund a period of study abroad during your bachelor’s degree. The exact amount depends on how convincing your application is. You will receive the money before you leave and will not have to repay it after you graduate. You will only have to repay it if you do not end up going abroad. The University of Nottingham awards this grant to students at Willoughby Hall, one of its halls of residence, and has been doing so since 1968.
Who can apply
- Where you live: You currently live, or have previously lived, at Willoughby Hall, a student hall of residence at the University of Nottingham.
- Degree: You are studying on a full-time bachelor’s degree programme at the University of Nottingham’s UK campus.
- Where you go: Next academic year, you will be studying abroad as part of your degree programme.
- Funding status: For funding purposes, you are considered a UK student (‘Home’ status).
- No outside sponsor: Neither an employer nor an industry sponsor is funding your degree programme. University scholarships and government grants are permitted.
- Financial need: You need financial support to cover the costs of a trip abroad.
- Field of study: Any subject.
How to apply
Please complete the official application form during the academic year prior to your year abroad. For example, you would apply in 2023/24 for a place at 2024/25. Please read the application guidelines first. Places are limited, and applications are assessed against one another.
How realistic are your chances?
This grant is awarded to only a very small number of applicants. You must have lived in a specific hall of residence, be studying in Nottingham, have ‘Home funding’ status, and be going abroad. Only a very small number of people are eligible to apply at all. If you clearly meet these criteria and can demonstrate a genuine financial need, your chances are good. As the amount of funding increases with the quality of your application, a clear, well-substantiated justification is key.
