The Menzies Bursaries

You will receive about 240 EUR per year (£200 p.a.) for up to four years to study at the University of St Andrews, Glasgow or Edinburgh in Scotland. A total of four scholarships will be awarded. The amount of the scholarship may vary, as this is determined by the trustees who manage the fund. The money comes from a foundation established by James Menzies, a former fishmonger from Glasgow.

Who can apply

• University: You are studying at the University of St Andrews, in Glasgow or in Edinburgh.
• Your degree: You undertake to complete a full degree programme, not just part of it.
• Field of study: Any topic is fine.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Priority: Places are allocated first to relatives of the founder, James Menzies; then to people with the surname Menzies; and finally to people born on the Menzies estate in the parishes of Dull, Weem or Fortingall. If none of these criteria apply, the places will be awarded to those deemed to be the most qualified and deserving.

How realistic are your chances?

Only four scholarships will be awarded, with priority given to relatives of the founder, people with the surname Menzies, and those born in three specific Scottish local authorities. If you belong to one of these groups and are studying at one of the three universities, your chances are good. All other applicants will only be considered for the places left vacant by these groups. You should therefore apply early and provide compelling reasons for your application.
