Society of Petroleum Engineers Aberdeen Bursary

You will receive a sum of one-off bursary of up to about 5,750 EUR (£500 to £5,000), which will be paid as a one-off payment in February. The timing of this payment helps students facing financial difficulties to complete their studies. The award winners will also be invited to the awards ceremony in Aberdeen. The funding comes from the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Aberdeen Chapter, a trade association for the energy sector. Over the past ten years, the organisation has awarded over £200,000 to students across Scotland.

Who can apply

• University: You are currently a full-time student at the University of Aberdeen, Robert Gordon University, Heriot-Watt University or the University of Dundee. Students who have extended their studies are not eligible to take part.
• Level: You are studying for a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree.
• Field of study: Your degree programme is of direct relevance to the energy sector.
• Career plan: You’d like to work in the energy sector.
• Grades: You have an excellent academic record.
• SPE membership: You are an active member of the SPE.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Download the application form from the SPE Aberdeen website and submit it by email, usually by mid-December (the deadline for 2025/26 was 14 December). Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to deliver their presentation to the jury in Aberdeen. This can also be done remotely. The winners will be announced in February.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined: you must be enrolled on an energy-related degree programme at one of the four Scottish universities listed and be an active member of the SPE. As a result, the pool of eligible candidates is small. If you clearly meet these criteria and can demonstrate both financial need and a concrete plan for a career in the energy sector, your chances are good. A convincing presentation of your application to the selection panel is crucial in determining which candidates make it onto the shortlist.
