About this scholarship

The Jim Duncan Scholarship

You will receive approximately 4,600 EUR per year (4,000 GBP) for a bachelor’s degree at University of Aberdeen in Scotland. You will receive this funding for the first two years of your degree. After that, you can apply for an extension each year. There are two of these scholarships available. Jim Duncan, a graduate of the University of Aberdeen, established them in 2001 to help students with great academic potential and genuine financial need.

Who can apply

  • University place: You have applied to the University of Aberdeen and have been offered a place on a full-time Bachelor’s degree programme. You cannot transfer this offer to another university.
  • Field of study: All full-time degree programmes at undergraduate level are recognised (e.g. MA, LLB, BSc, MEng, MBChB, BMus), with the exception of the PGDE and BA Education programmes.
  • Your path into study: You are either just starting your degree or resuming your studies after a break, or you can demonstrate that you have significant financial needs.
  • Financial need: You must provide evidence that you require financial support. Without evidence of your circumstances, your application will be rejected.
  • Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may apply, regardless of their fee status.
  • Bonus: Medical students are particularly welcome, but attendance is not compulsory.

How to apply

You apply directly to the University of Aberdeen. You must submit an application form, a letter of recommendation and evidence of your financial circumstances. The application deadline is 22 April. A scholarship committee will then decide who is awarded the scholarship.

How realistic are your chances?

There are only two scholarships available, so places are limited. However, the target group is narrowly defined: you must already have an offer of a place from the University of Aberdeen, demonstrate a proven financial need, and be either a returning student or a non-traditional student. If you fit this profile and can provide solid evidence to support it, your chances are good. It is advisable to apply as early as possible.
