Benefit

You will receive about 11,500 EUR per year (£10,000) for three years – that is, around 34,500 EUR (£30,000) in total – whilst you are studying for your PhD at the Warburg Institute, which is part of the University of London. The money will be paid out in three annual instalments, and you will manage it yourself. You can use it to cover tuition fees, living costs, or both. The Institute specialises in cultural history and the classical tradition – that is, how ideas, images and symbols from antiquity have been passed down through the Renaissance and beyond. Please note that this is not a full scholarship. Tuition fees for international students are generally in excess of £10,000 per year, so you will probably need an additional source of funding to cover the remaining amount.

Eligibility

• Degree: You have been offered a place on the MPhil/PhD programme at the Warburg Institute.
• Field of study: Your research aligns with the Institute’s key areas of focus: cultural history, history of ideas, classical tradition, Renaissance studies and related fields.
• Where you study: You will be studying on-campus at the Warburg Institute in London. Distance-learning students are not eligible to apply.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. Preference will be given to international students, but British students are not excluded.

How to apply

Firstly, you will need to be admitted to the Warburg Institute’s MPhil/PhD programme. You should then apply for the scholarship via the SAS online application portal. The application deadline is 20 March.

How realistic are your chances?

The pool of applicants is, by its very nature, small. You must already have been offered a place on a PhD programme at a specialist institute, and your research proposal must align with its narrow focus. If you are a clear fit for this field and can demonstrate outstanding academic achievement – particularly as an international student – your prospects are good. Bear in mind that the funding does not cover the full tuition fees for international students; you should therefore plan how you will finance the difference.
