Robson-Scott Travelling Scholarship

You will receive financial support for travel abroad as part of research stays relating to your postgraduate work on the languages and literatures of German-speaking, Dutch or Scandinavian cultures. The funding comes from a memorial fund at the University of London, which was established in 1980 in honour of Professor W.D. Robson-Scott. The exact amount is not disclosed, as it depends on the fund’s annual returns.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a postgraduate student, for example on a research-oriented Master’s programme or a PhD programme.
• Where you study: You are enrolled at a university in the United Kingdom.
• Field: Your research focuses on the languages and literatures of German-speaking countries, the Netherlands or Scandinavia.
• Purpose: You will need to travel abroad for your research, and the scholarship covers the costs of these trips.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

The Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies, which is part of the School of Advanced Study at the University of London, awards the scholarship once a year in the spring.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is aimed at a small target group: PhD students at British universities whose research projects fall within these specific language areas and who need to travel abroad for their research. As only a few applicants meet all these criteria, competition for suitable candidates is low. If your project clearly meets the requirements, your chances are good.
