About this award / prize

Access Programme Award

If you win, you will receive a one-off cash prize of about 232 EUR (200 GBP) and a certificate. The runners-up will instead receive a special award worth approximately 58 EUR (50 GBP) and a certificate. The University of Leeds awards this prize to students who have entered university via a non-traditional route and have since achieved good academic results.

Who can apply

  • How you got in: You have enrolled at the University of Leeds via an access programme or an alternative admissions route, such as ‘Access to Leeds’ or the ‘Interdisciplinary Science Foundation Course’. These routes are designed for students whose admission is not based on standard academic grades.
  • Current level: You are currently a Bachelor’s student or are taking part in a 0 preparatory programme (a foundation year prior to the main course of study).
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
  • Grades: You are achieving excellent results at school.

How to apply

You cannot apply yourself. You must be nominated by someone else. The nomination period begins in January each year, and the winner is announced later in the year.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is aimed at a small, specific group: only students at the University of Leeds who have been admitted via a special admissions route are eligible, and there is essentially one winner and, occasionally, a runner-up. As you must be nominated and cannot apply yourself, it is just as important to be recognised by the staff making the nominations as it is to achieve good grades. If you meet the criteria for the ‘Access Route’ and perform well, a nomination is a realistic prospect. Please note that the prize is a one-off symbolic award and not an ongoing grant.
