About this scholarship
Gordon Studentships in American Studies
You will receive a one-off grant of about EUR 900 (between £500 and £1,000) towards your tuition fees for one academic year. This covers only part of your tuition fees; it does not cover living costs. The grant is awarded by the Andrew Hook Centre for American Studies at the University of Glasgow, and several grants are awarded each year.
Who can apply
- University: You are studying at the University of Glasgow or have applied to study there.
- Level: You are studying for a full-time Master’s degree (MLitt) or a PhD, for example the MLitt in American Studies or the MLitt in Modern American Literature.
- Field of study: Your subject relates to the United States. It may be in the fields of history, English literature or American studies, and covers American culture, history and literature.
- Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. Applicants from the United Kingdom, the EU and non-EU countries are equally welcome.
How to apply
Please send a letter of application and a writing sample of approximately 2,000 words to the Office of American Studies. You must also have applied for a place at the University of Glasgow by the same deadline. The application period begins on 2 June, and 6 July is the final deadline for the 2026/27 academic year.
How realistic are your chances?
This funding scheme is very specific: you must be studying a subject related to America at a particular university, which means that only a few people meet the criteria. If your subject area clearly fits the criteria and you submit a compelling writing sample, your chances are good, especially as several scholarships are awarded each year. The amounts are modest, so you should regard this funding more as a grant than as full funding.
