Charterhouse European Bursary

You will receive up to £6,500 (about 7,500 EUR) to undertake a study visit to another European country. The exact amount depends on how long you stay abroad and how much your stay abroad costs. The stay must last between three months and one year. The funding comes from a fund administered by the University of Oxford from a 1991 donation made by the Charterhouse Charitable Trust. As a rule, two to three of these scholarships are awarded per cycle. You may study in any EU country, as well as in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia.

Who can apply

• University: You are studying at the University of Oxford and will remain enrolled there during your time abroad. The college you attend is irrelevant.
• Level: You are a student on an undergraduate or postgraduate programme.
• Field of study: All applicants are welcome to apply. Preference will be given to students studying economics, business administration, applied mathematics in industry, engineering and technology.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, and your fee status is irrelevant.
• Year of study: Applicants from all years of study are eligible to apply. If you are in your final year of study, you must explain why studying abroad at this stage is of direct relevance to your degree programme.
• Contact abroad: Before you apply, you must have made contact with a potential supervisor at the overseas institution and be able to provide evidence of this.
• Timing: Your trip must take place during the academic year 2027/28 or during the long holidays immediately before or after it.

How to apply

The application period for 2027/28 will open again in autumn 2026 (Michaelmas term). The application deadline is Friday, 29 January 2027, at 12 noon. The selection process will take place shortly afterwards, and the results will be announced in May 2027.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is open to all students at the University of Oxford, regardless of their field of study or nationality; however, it is awarded to only two or three people per cycle, so competition is fierce. Your chances are improved if you are studying a priority subject (Economics, Management, Applied Mathematics in Industry, Engineering or Technology) and can demonstrate a concrete, well-planned link with a supervisor abroad. A clear, relevant proposal carries more weight than a broad one.
