The George Melhuish Postgraduate Scholarship

You will receive approximately 4,300 EUR (around £3,700) for a research degree in philosophy at University College London (UCL). You can use this money towards your tuition fees or living costs. The Department of Philosophy at UCL awards this grant as one of several smaller grants, which are paid out as a one-off sum at the start of your degree.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are starting a research degree in philosophy at UCL, either the two-year MPhil programme or the three-year PhD.
• Field of study: Philosophy, including linguistics and cultural studies.
• University: You’re studying at UCL in London.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, whether from the UK or abroad.
• Grades: You must hold a first-class British bachelor’s degree in philosophy or an equivalent foreign qualification. The prize will be awarded to the applicants with the highest academic merit.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. All students who have been admitted to the MPhil or PhD programme in Philosophy at UCL will automatically be considered on the basis of their academic achievements. Apply for the programme itself by 9 January 2026 to start in September 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a small departmental scholarship tied to a specific subject area and a university, meaning that only applicants wishing to study philosophy at UCL are eligible to apply. As it is automatically awarded to the highest-achieving admitted students, your main task is to secure a place on a highly sought-after MPhil programme or a PhD programme, for which a ‘First Class’ degree is required. If you are a strong candidate and are offered a place, you have a genuine chance of being awarded the supplementary scholarship.
