What the Politics Gibbs Prize gives you

You will receive a sum of one-off cash prize of about 665 EUR (depending on the award, approximately 285 to 580 GBP). The University of Oxford awards this prize through its Department of Politics and International Relations; it is funded by a bequest from Charles D. D. Gibbs. It is a one-off payment in recognition of outstanding examination results, and does not include any monthly grant or ongoing support. Each year, Oxford awards several separate prizes, for example for the best written examination papers, the best dissertation and the best performance in core political science subjects such as International Relations, Comparative Government and Political Theory.

Who can get it

• University: You are studying at the University of Oxford.
• Level: You are a student on an undergraduate programme and are currently sitting your final exams (the ‘Final Honour School’).
• Subject: You are studying politics or a degree programme that includes this subject, such as Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE).
• Results: You are among the top students in your coursework, written examinations or your final dissertation.
• Nationality: All nationalities can qualify.

How to apply

You do not need to apply. The examiners automatically select the winners based on your academic performance and the results of your final examination. If no candidate meets the necessary criteria in a given year, the prize may not be awarded.

How realistic are your chances?

You cannot apply for it, so there is no strategy involved: the winners are determined solely on the basis of their ranking compared to their fellow students in the final examinations. Only the top one or two in each category win, so there is genuine competition. To secure the prize, you must be among the best politics students in your year at Oxford.
