The Elizabeth Anscombe Thesis Prize

It is an academic prize for the best undergraduate philosophy thesis written at the University of Oxford in a given year. It is awarded by the Faculty of Philosophy. It is named after G. E. M. (Elizabeth) Anscombe, one of the most significant female philosophers of the 20 century. The examiners place great emphasis on originality, well-founded analysis and argumentation, a thorough grasp of the relevant subject matter, and a clear and precise writing style. As this is an honorary prize, the Faculty does not specify a monetary value.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at the University of Oxford.
• Level: You are a Bachelor’s student and are currently sitting your final exams, i.e. the exams required to complete your degree.
• Field of study: As part of your degree programme, you will write a final dissertation in philosophy. This applies to all degree programmes that include a philosophy component, such as PPE, Philosophy and Physics, Computer Science and Philosophy, Philosophy and Theology, and Philosophy and Linguistics.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. The examiners will consider all eligible philosophy dissertations submitted as part of your final examinations and select the best one. Simply by submitting your dissertation, you will be entered into the selection process.

How realistic are your chances?

The competition is extremely fierce. As a rule, only one dissertation is awarded the prize each year, selected from all the philosophical dissertations submitted by Oxford students as part of their final examinations. In some years, the examiners name several winners; in others, no prize is awarded at all. Your chances depend entirely on whether you submit an exceptional, original piece of work. The 2024 winner achieved by far the highest mark of the year group.
