University of Sheffield undergraduate bursary

You will receive a grant of up to about 1,450 EUR per year (£1,250) from the University of Sheffield. This is paid for each year of your undergraduate degree, and you do not need to repay it unless your circumstances change. It is awarded in addition to your state student finance.

The basic amount depends on your household income:

• Up to approximately 1,150 EUR (£1,000) per year, if your household earns £25,000 or less
• Around 575 EUR (£500) between £25,001 and £30,000
• Around 290 EUR (£250) between £30,001 and £40,000

In addition, you may be eligible for an extra top-up of 290 EUR (£250). You are eligible for this in two ways: Either your household income is £25,000 or less and you live in one of the most deprived regions of England, or you live in the Sheffield City Region in an area where few people go to university and have achieved grades ABB or better at A-level. You will retain the grant whilst studying abroad for one academic year, but not whilst on a work placement or spending a year in industry.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are a full-time undergraduate student at the University of Sheffield.
• Fee status: You are a home student, which means you pay the home (UK) tuition fee rate.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Student finance: You have applied to Student Finance England (or your regional student finance organisation) for a loan to cover your tuition fees and an income-based living costs loan. If you do not wish to take out a loan, you can apply for a £0 loan instead, which takes household income into account.
• Financial need: Your household income is £40,000 per year or less to be eligible for the means-tested main grant. There is no income limit for the Sheffield City Region supplementary grant.
• Second degree: If this is your second degree, you may not be eligible, as you may not be entitled to the relevant student loans.

How to apply

You do not need to submit an application. The university will automatically assess your eligibility based on the details you provided to Student Finance England and UCAS. This assessment takes place in October following your enrolment, and you will receive an email by the end of October confirming whether you are eligible.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competition. If you meet the income and student finance eligibility criteria, you will receive the grant automatically – without having to apply and with no set quota for approvals. Your chances therefore depend on whether the facts are correct, and not on whether you stand out from other applicants. Make sure you have your means test for student finance to hand, as the university will use this to assess your situation.
