About this scholarship

Oxford-David Jones Graduate Scholarship

You will receive a full scholarship. This covers all your tuition fees for the university and the college, and also includes a grant of approximately 16,000 EUR towards your living costs. The funding applies for the entire duration of your fee-paying studies, which is usually 12 months for a one-year Master’s programme and longer for a PhD programme. It is funded by a bequest made by former student David Jones to Jesus College, University of Oxford, and is intended to support a PhD student in the field of history.

Who can apply

  • Course: You are applying for a new full-time degree programme in History at the University of Oxford.
  • College: You must study at Jesus College. If you win the competition, you will be offered a place there, which will supersede all other offers of admission. You do not have to list Jesus College as your first choice.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Grades: Selection is based solely on academic performance, so you will need to have very good academic results.
  • Not eligible: Postgraduate certificate or diploma programmes, part-time programmes, programmes without enrolment, and all individuals who have a deferred (postponed) place on a course.

How to apply

There is no separate scholarship application form. Submit your application for the Master’s programme in History at Oxford by the January deadline (24 January), and you will automatically be considered provided you meet the entry requirements. This scholarship is not awarded every year; please therefore check whether it is available for the year in which you plan to commence your studies.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very limited: it is aimed exclusively at history graduates who will be studying at a specific college in Oxford, and as a rule, only one scholarship is awarded per award cycle. The pool of applicants is small, but the standard is high. Selection is based solely on academic merit, so very good grades are crucial. Make sure that the scholarship is available for your first year of study before you count on it.
