University of Oxford - Oxford-Rothermere American Institute-Clarendon Graduate Scholarship

Benefit

You will receive a full scholarship to study for a PhD at the University of Oxford. This will cover your tuition fees in full, and you will also receive a monthly living allowance of approximately 1,441 EUR (see info box). The funding applies for the entire duration during which tuition fees are payable for your studies. It is awarded by the University of Oxford in conjunction with the Rothermere American Institute (RAI). You may only take up the scholarship at University College, one of the colleges at Oxford.

Eligibility

• Degree level: You are applying for a full-time DPhil programme (which is the name given to the doctoral degree at Oxford).
• Subject: Your degree programme is History (Faculty of History) or Political Science (Institute of Political Science and International Relations).
• Research focus: Your doctoral thesis deals with American topics.
• Where you live: You are normally resident in the United Kingdom.
• College: If you pass the entrance exam, you will be placed at University College, regardless of which college you specified in your application.

How to apply

You do not need to submit a separate application. Simply submit the standard University of Oxford application form for your DPhil programme by the deadline of 24 January. All eligible applicants will be considered automatically. The selection decision is expected to be made towards the end of May.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined: you must be resident in the UK, be undertaking a full-time DPhil in History or Politics at the University of Oxford, and be conducting research on American topics. Because of this small, specific pool of applicants, fewer people are competing for this scholarship than for the University of Oxford’s open funding schemes. The real hurdle lies in securing a good DPhil place at Oxford in the first place. Once you have cleared that hurdle and meet the requirement to focus on American topics, your prospects here are good.
