About this scholarship

What the AJ Ayer Scholarship gives you

You will receive a one-off grant of approximately 4,412 EUR (around £2,000) towards your philosophy degree at University College London (UCL). You may use the money to cover your tuition fees or as supplementary funding. The scholarship is administered by the Department of Philosophy at UCL and is named after A.J. Ayer, a renowned philosopher who taught at UCL. It is awarded for one academic year only; you should therefore regard it as helpful additional funding rather than full funding for your entire course of study.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You are applying for a research degree programme in philosophy at UCL, either the MPhil programme or a PhD.
  • Field of study: Philosophy only.
  • Where you study: University College London in the United Kingdom.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Grades: The award is given to the best candidates, so good results are crucial.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. All applicants for a research degree in philosophy at UCL (MPhil or PhD) will be considered automatically. Please apply by 9 January to start your programme the following September.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a small award linked to a specific discipline at a particular university; therefore, only applicants wishing to study philosophy at UCL may apply for it. UCL has one of the largest philosophy departments in the United Kingdom, and places are highly competitive. If your application is strong enough to secure a place on the MPhil programme or the PhD programme, you are already in the running without having to complete any additional forms.
