Dawes-Hicks Award

If you are undertaking a research degree in philosophy at University College London (UCL), you will receive a one-off grant of approximately 5,800 EUR (around £5,000). You may use the money towards your tuition fees or your living costs. This is a one-off payment for one year, not a full multi-year grant. The Department of Philosophy at UCL awards this grant on the basis of academic merit.

Who can apply

• Degree: You have been admitted to a philosophy research programme at UCL, either the two-year MPhil programme or the three-year PhD programme.
• Field of study: Philosophy only.
• Where you study: University College London in the UK.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are eligible to apply, provided they have been admitted to a research degree programme in Philosophy at UCL.
• Grades: You will need very good academic results, as selection is based on academic performance.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. All students who have been admitted to a research degree programme in Philosophy at UCL will automatically be considered. The key factor, therefore, is a compelling application for the MPhil programme or PhD.

How realistic are your chances?

Only those who have been admitted to a research degree programme in Philosophy at UCL are eligible for this award, so the pool of candidates is small. Admission to the programme is highly competitive in its own right, and the award is then given to the best of the admitted candidates.
