About this grant / loan

Lindsey Hughes Postgraduate Bursary

You will receive a one-off payment of about 990 EUR (£850) to support your doctoral thesis during your final year or final two years of study. The scholarship is awarded by the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES). It is named after Lindsey Hughes, a professor of Russian history at the school.

Who can apply

  • Degree level: You are a PhD student at UCL SSEES.
  • Field of study: Your research focuses on Russian history or Russian culture.
  • Funding gap: You do not receive a full scholarship from any other source and are in the third or fourth year of your PhD programme. If your existing scholarship covers only your tuition fees, you may apply each year.
  • Financial need: Both your financial circumstances and your academic achievements will be taken into account when awarding the scholarship.
  • Nationality: Open to all nationalities.
  • Repeat applications: You may apply again if you were not selected previously.

How to apply

The scholarship is advertised every year during the autumn term; the application deadline is 1 December. You must submit an application form, a description of your research project of up to 500 words, the expected submission date, and a letter of recommendation from your supervisor. The Director of the SSEES recommends scholarship recipients on the basis of their academic profile and financial need.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is aimed at a small target group: PhD students at UCL SSEES who are in the final stages of their PhD, are conducting research on Russian history or culture, and do not receive full funding. As the group of eligible applicants is therefore small, competition for a suitable candidate is low. As only one scholarship is awarded each year, a clear, well-reasoned presentation of your research and your funding shortfall is crucial to the award decision.
