What the Barton Prize gives you

The Barton Prize is an annual cash award presented to one or more outstanding students at the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom. It is a one-off award funded by the interest from a memorial fund established in 1925 in honour of Edwin Henry Barton, a former student of the University of Nottingham who later became a professor of physics there.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are studying at the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Nottingham.
• Subject: You study physics.
• Performance: Your performance over the past school year was among the best in your year group.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How you are chosen

You do not need to apply for this prize. Each year, the Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy selects the winner on the basis of their achievements and work over the past year.

How realistic are your chances?

This is an internal award decided by the headteacher, not a competition you need to enter. It is awarded exclusively to the best physics pupils in Nottingham. If you’re already among the best pupils in your year group, you’ve got a good chance of winning it. All you need to do is achieve outstanding results.
