Tom and Maureen Fairlie Scholarship

You will receive £1,500 per year (about 1,750 EUR) as a contribution towards your living costs, which will be paid at the start of the academic year. The scholarship is valid for the entire duration of your postgraduate studies, provided you continue to make satisfactory academic progress. It is awarded by the Moray House School of Education and Sport at the University of Edinburgh. Only one scholarship will be awarded.

Who can apply

• Programme: You have been admitted to the PGDE (Professional Graduate Diploma in Education, Secondary) programme at the University of Edinburgh. This qualification will train you to teach in Scottish secondary schools.
• Subject focus: You intend to teach mathematics or a science subject, including design and technology, at secondary school level. Research projects that contribute to improving the teaching of these subjects within the Scottish curriculum will also be considered.
• Grades: You have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement. This forms the key basis for the award.
• Commitment: You demonstrate a genuine interest in teaching or in the further development of maths and science teaching in Scottish secondary schools.
• Nationality: Open to all nationalities.

How to apply

Applications are made via the University of Edinburgh’s scholarship system. A selection panel meets in June and informs all applicants of the outcome by the end of July. In addition to your grades, the panel also takes your personal circumstances and achievements into account.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one scholarship is awarded, and the target group is narrowly defined: you must be enrolled on the PGDE programme in Edinburgh and specialise in teaching mathematics or science. This keeps the pool of applicants small, meaning that a well-suited candidate has a genuine chance of success. Whilst good grades are the most important factor, a clear and concrete commitment to teaching these subjects in Scottish schools is what will set you apart from the rest.
