Southampton undergraduate bursary

You get up to £2,000 per year (about 2,300 EUR) from the University of Southampton, and you never pay it back. The amount depends on your household income:

• Income of £23,200 (about 26,800 EUR) or less: £2,000 per year.
• Income between £23,201 and £36,200 (about 41,800 EUR): £1,000 per year (about 1,150 EUR).

The money is paid in three instalments each academic year, for as long as you stay eligible. It is a need-based award for students from lower-income households.

Who can apply

• Degree: You study a full-time undergraduate or integrated master's degree at the University of Southampton.
• Fees: You pay the full UK Home tuition fee.
• Household income: Your household income is £36,200 (about 41,800 EUR) per year or less.
• Income check: Your income is assessed by Student Finance (England, Wales or Northern Ireland) or SAAS Scotland, the UK bodies that fund student loans.
• Field of study: All subjects are open.
• Not eligible: Part-time students, external repeat students, students on a placement year or a full-time year in employment, students who have suspended their studies, and students on government-funded postgraduate courses such as a PGCE.

How to apply

There is no separate application. Apply to Student Finance for a means-tested maintenance loan (or a £0 loan with an income assessment) and agree to let them share your income details with the university. The check happens every October, and your household income must be confirmed by 31 May of that academic year.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competition. If you study full-time at Southampton, pay the Home fee, and your household income is under £36,200, you receive the bursary automatically. The only real hurdle is getting your income assessed by Student Finance on time, so apply and consent to the data sharing well before the deadline.
