About this scholarship

Bader Bursaries

You have been awarded the up to about 2,300 EUR (2,000 GBP) per year of study scholarship to fund your chemistry degree at University College London (UCL). The Department of Chemistry awards four of these scholarships, which are funded by Dr Alfred and Isabel Bader. Your grades are not the deciding factor: the department assesses your potential rather than your A-level grades.

Who can apply

  • What you study: You are starting a degree in chemistry at UCL’s Department of Chemistry.
  • Your school: You attend a state school, i.e. a school funded by the state, rather than a fee-paying private school.
  • Family background: Normally, there isn’t a tradition of going to university in your family, so you’d be one of the first to do so.
  • Potential over grades: What matters is how much potential you have as a pupil, not your exam results.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

You don’t apply yourself. Your school will put you forward if it believes you meet the requirements. Speak to your school and ask them to put you forward.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is very limited: there are only four scholarships, and these are exclusively for chemistry students from a specific department who attended a state school and come from a family in which no one has previously gone to university. The pool of eligible applicants is therefore small. As the department places greater emphasis on your potential than on top marks, a strong recommendation from your school, which demonstrates your true potential, is more important than a flawless school report.
