Crewdson Trust Awards

You will receive a one-off award of usually up to about 2,300 EUR (up to 2,000 GBP) to support a one-year postgraduate programme or a research project in the field of Christian theology at the University of Oxford. The award may also take the form of a travel grant, a book grant or a prize. It is funded by the Joan Crewdson Foundation, which was established by the Crewdson Trust at Harris Manchester College, Oxford. The aim is to support work in the field of Christian theology, including new approaches to the formulation or application of the Christian faith, as well as research into how religion can help to end violence and foster peace.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at the University of Oxford.
• Degree level: You are currently undertaking advanced theological studies this year that include a substantial research component, such as a Master’s thesis or a doctoral thesis. Students on the PGDip or in the first year of the MTh programme are generally not eligible to take part, as this year does not include a significant research component.
• Field: Your studies or research focus on Christian theology.
• Residence: You live in the UK.
• Financial need: Priority is given to applicants who are not fully financially secure or who have only a very low income.
• College: Priority is given to students at Harris Manchester College, but students from other colleges in Oxford can also win prizes – and indeed do so.

How to apply

Please email a completed application form and your CV to the Crewdson Trust. Ask your supervisor to send a letter of recommendation to the same address. The deadline for applications is 20 January. You will be notified of the result the following month.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is aimed at a narrowly defined group: you must be a PhD student in theology at the University of Oxford, be conducting independent research this year, and be living in the UK. If you meet these criteria, can demonstrate that you are not receiving full funding, and have an affiliation with Harris Manchester College, your chances are good. As this is a one-off grant from a single foundation, clear, well-documented applications will be given priority.
