Dennis Curry Scholarship in Micropalaeontology (UCL)

You will receive approximately 4,700 EUR (around £4,000) for the Master’s programme in ‘Geosciences’ at University College London (UCL). The funding covers the entire duration of the one-year programme. It is partial funding: it covers part of your costs but is not sufficient to fully fund your studies. The scholarship is awarded by the Department of Earth Sciences at UCL. The scholarship is named after Dennis Curry (1912–2001), a former visiting professor at UCL and a leading figure in micropalaeontology, the science of microscopic fossils.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are applying for the Master’s programme in ‘Geosciences’ at UCL, specialising in micropalaeontology.
• Application status: You have already applied for the MSc programme and have a UCL application number.
• Residency: You are based in the UK.
• Financial need: You are not receiving full funding from any other scholarship or source.
• Interest: You may demonstrate a keen interest in the earth sciences and, in particular, in micropalaeontology.
• Grades: You have an excellent academic record.

How to apply

First, apply for the MSc programme in ‘Geosciences’ to obtain your UCL application number. You should then email your CV, the names of two referees and a short personal statement (maximum 500 words) explaining your interest in micropalaeontology to the Head of the MSc programme in ‘Geosciences’. The application deadline is 31 July each year.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined. You must be resident in the UK, have been admitted to a specific MSc programme at a university, and be studying micropalaeontology. Very few people apply for this scholarship. If you clearly meet these criteria, are not already receiving full funding elsewhere, and can demonstrate a genuine interest in this field, your chances are good. Make sure to apply well in advance of the July deadline and ensure your personal statement is as specific as possible.
