About this grant / loan

What you get

You will receive funding to prepare and publish research on the cultural history of Europe: specifically, on how art, ideas and traditions have developed across the continent over time. The amount and duration of the funding are not fixed. The Director of the Warburg Institute decides on these matters on a case-by-case basis. The fund is based at the Warburg Institute, which forms part of the School of Advanced Study at the University of London. It originated from the Erasmus Prize, which was awarded to Sir Ernst Gombrich in 1975. As the Institute’s director at the time, he donated half of the prize money to support young researchers.

Who can apply

  • Career stage: You are at the start of your academic career.
  • Field of study: You specialise in the cultural history of Europe.
  • What it funds: You are preparing or publishing an academic paper in this field.
  • Where you are based: You are affiliated with the Warburg Institute at the University of London.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a scholarship open to applications. The Director of the Warburg Institute awards it at his or her own discretion for specific research projects on European cultural history. It is therefore very narrowly defined and is aimed at a small group of young researchers who are already working in the Institute’s field of specialisation. If your research falls precisely within this area, it is best to contact the Institute directly.
