The Marvin Bower Scholarship

You will receive a postgraduate scholarship of about 735 EUR to study at Balliol College, University of Oxford for a period of up to 24 months. You may combine this scholarship with other funding, such as the University of Oxford’s Clarendon Fund or a grant from the UK Research Council. Balliol College, one of the colleges at Oxford, funds the scholarship and awards it on the basis of your academic merit.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are applying for a postgraduate programme at Oxford, such as a Master’s or a DPhil (PhD) programme.
• Field of study: Your degree subject is Economics, Business Administration (not the MBA), International Relations or Mathematics.
• College: You’re studying at Balliol College, Oxford.
• Nationality: Open to students of all nationalities.
• Academic record: You’ve got very good marks, as the award is only given to the best candidates.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. You apply for your Master’s programme through the University of Oxford by the application deadline in December or January for the relevant programme. You will then automatically be considered for this scholarship. On the Oxford application form, please indicate ‘Balliol’ as your preferred college so that the college can consider your application.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is very specific: it applies only to four subject areas at a single college in Oxford, meaning that very few applicants qualify for it. However, as Oxford attracts top candidates from around the world and the college bases the award strictly on merit, competition amongst suitable applicants is fierce. With outstanding academic achievements and a subject that is clearly on the list, your prospects are realistic.
