Snell Exhibition

You will receive about EUR 5,900 per year (5,000 GBP) for postgraduate study at Balliol College, University of Oxford. The funding is awarded for the duration of your research studies, up to a maximum of three years. You may combine it with other sources of funding, in particular the University of Oxford’s Clarendon Fund and grants from the UK research councils. The scholarship is funded by a trust established by John Snell in 1677 to enable graduates of the University of Glasgow to pursue further studies at Oxford. One person is selected each year.

Who can apply

• Previous university: You graduated from the University of Glasgow.
• Where you study next: You have been offered a place on a postgraduate programme at the University of Oxford, based at Balliol College.
• Field of study: Any subject.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they have studied in Glasgow.
• Selection basis: Selection is based on academic merit. There is no assessment of financial need.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. Apply for your Master’s programme at Oxford by the relevant application deadline in December or January for that programme, and your application will automatically be considered. You do not need to specify Balliol as your preferred college. If you are offered a place, you will be offered a place at Balliol College.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is very narrowly defined: Only graduates of the University of Glasgow who have been offered a place on a postgraduate programme at Oxford are eligible, and only one person is selected each year. This keeps the pool of eligible candidates small, but the bar is set high, as selection is based on academic merit. If you are an outstanding graduate of the University of Glasgow and are heading to Oxford, you already belong to the very group for which this award was created – so it is definitely worth keeping an eye on developments.
