Hall-Houghton Senior Prize

You are to receive a one-off award of around 630 EUR for outstanding work on the Septuagint, the ancient Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible. The award is presented by the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Oxford. The prize recognises your expert handling of the Septuagint, both in relation to the Hebrew Bible and to the Greek New Testament. You have demonstrated this in an examination paper or in a submitted paper that deals extensively with the Septuagint. The prize is also known as the ‘Hall-Houghton Septuagint Prize’.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled at the University of Oxford.
• Degree: You are a PhD student on one of the following Master’s programmes: MSt or MPhil in Theology with a specialisation in Biblical Studies, MPhil in Philosophical Theology, or MPhil in Judaism and Christianity in the Greco-Roman World.
• Field: Your dissertation or submitted paper deals in depth with the Septuagint.
• Nationality: Open to all nationalities.
• Performance: You will achieve an excellent result in the relevant examination.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. The faculty examiners decide who should receive the prize on the basis of your examination results or the work you have submitted, and award it once a year.

How realistic are your chances?

This prize is very narrowly defined. Only PhD students at the University of Oxford who are enrolled on specific Master’s programmes in theology and demonstrate outstanding achievement in the field of the Septuagint are eligible, meaning that the pool of candidates is very small each year. It is not possible to apply for it, as there is no application process. The only way to be considered is through outstanding performance in examinations or in a dissertation on the Septuagint. For a suitable student who excels in this field, the prize is a fitting recognition of their work.
