Liu Shiming Scholarship at the Slade

You will receive a one-off grant of approximately 2,600 EUR (the equivalent of US$3,000 in pounds sterling). This is intended to cover tuition fees or living costs whilst you are studying for your MA or MFA in Fine Art in London. The MA programme lasts 24 months and the MFA programme 18 months; the grant is intended to cover the entire duration of your studies. It is funded by the Liu Shiming Art Foundation and will be awarded to a new art student from the 2026/27 academic year onwards.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are starting an MA or MFA degree in Fine Art at UCL’s College of Art in London.
• Study phase: You are a first-year student and not a current student.
• Field of study: Visual arts (painting, sculpture or other visual art forms).
• Nationality: Open to everyone, regardless of whether you pay UK or international tuition fees.
• Money you need: You can prove that you need financial support.
• Grades: Judging by your application and your interview, you have a track record of outstanding academic and artistic achievements.

How to apply

You do not apply for the scholarship directly. Simply apply online for the MA or MFA programme in ‘Fine Art’ and attach your portfolio. Promising applicants will be invited to an interview via video call. Those with the highest scores will then be asked to complete a short funding application form, so that the scholarship can be awarded to someone who both performs well and requires financial support.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a single scholarship for a first-year student on a competitive art degree programme, so the chances aren’t particularly good. Only the best candidates from the interviews will be considered, and amongst them, the scholarship will go to someone who can also demonstrate a genuine financial need. If you are offered a place, make a good impression at the interview and can demonstrate that you need financial support, you have a real chance.
