Clare Winsten Memorial Award

You will receive a one-off grant of £10,000 (about 11,800 EUR). This money is intended to fund a bold artistic project, such as a drawing trip, a stay abroad or a new series of works. It is not intended to cover day-to-day living expenses such as rent or food. The aim is to take a creative risk. The prize is funded by a donation left to UCL by the artist Clare Winsten and is awarded to a female artist from the Slade School of Fine Art.

Who can apply

• Institution: You are studying at the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London (UCL) or have recently graduated from there.
• Field of study: You are studying Fine Art at undergraduate level (BA/BFA) or postgraduate level (MA/MFA).
• Gender: The prize is open exclusively to female artists.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Stage: You are currently a student or have just completed your degree.

How to apply

There is no application form, and you cannot apply directly. A panel comprising senior staff at the Slade selects the winner from the works on display at the final exhibition. It is therefore the works you exhibit there that are decisive.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is very narrow: one grant a year, for a female artist at a single school, chosen from the degree show rather than by application. You cannot chase it directly, so your chances rest entirely on the work you exhibit. If you are a Slade artist whose final show stands out, you are in the running. There is no separate route in.
