Philip Bagby Studentship

You will receive a named top-up grant of about 1,051 EUR to support your PhD (DPhil) in Anthropology at University of Oxford for up to three years. The Faculty of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography awards this scholarship in addition to its own main scholarships. The scholarship supplements your existing funding and does not, on its own, cover your living costs. It is intended for research into how cities with a written culture emerged and developed; your project must therefore address this topic.

Who can apply

• Level: You are starting a PhD (DPhil) in Anthropology. This offer is not intended for Master’s students.
• Where you study: You have been admitted to the Department of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography at the University of Oxford.
• Research topic: Your work centres on the development of urban, literate societies – that is, cities and communities that have developed around writing.
• Stage: You are a new PhD student. Only current Bagby scholarship holders may reapply, up to three years after their initial funding has ended.
• Nationality: Open to applicants from all countries.

How to apply

There is no separate application form. You should apply in the usual way for the DPhil in Anthropology at Oxford, and your application will be considered automatically. The faculty makes its decisions in late spring and will notify the selected candidates at that time.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a single, named scholarship linked to a narrowly defined topic – the study of urban writing cultures – within a specific department at a university, meaning that very few people are eligible for it. If your project fits this theme and you are offered a place on the DPhil programme in Anthropology at Oxford, you will be part of a small group with real prospects. Bear in mind that this is supplementary funding rather than full funding; you will therefore need to secure additional funding.
