About this scholarship
What you get
The University of Southampton's School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering runs two separate chemistry scholarships. Which one fits you depends on whether you pay UK or international tuition fees.
- Excellence in Chemistry Scholarship: a one-off 1,000 GBP (about 1,150 EUR) in your first year, for UK and EU students.
- Chemistry Dean's International Scholarship: a 5,000 GBP (about 5,750 EUR) tuition fee discount in your first year, for international students. Three of these are awarded each year.
Both cover only the first year of study, and both are for chemistry or chemical engineering degrees.
Who can apply
For the Excellence in Chemistry Scholarship (worth 1,000 GBP):
- Where you study: You take an undergraduate degree in chemistry or chemical engineering at Southampton.
- Fee status: You are a UK or EU student.
- Grades: You achieve A*AA at A-Level (or an equivalent qualification), with the A* in chemistry.
For the Chemistry Dean's International Scholarship (worth 5,000 GBP):
- Where you study: You take an undergraduate or master's degree in chemistry or chemical engineering at Southampton.
- Fee status: You are an international (overseas fee) student.
- Offer: You hold a conditional or unconditional offer for your course.
- Grades: You have A-Level grade A or A*, IB grade 6 or 7 at Higher Level, or an equivalent qualification.
- No double funding: You do not receive another external scholarship.
How to apply
The Excellence in Chemistry Scholarship needs no separate application. If you meet the grade conditions, you get it automatically. The Chemistry Dean's International Scholarship is competitive. After applying for your course, you fill in an online scholarship form and answer two short written questions. One is on your career goals (up to 500 words). The other is on how you would represent Southampton as an international chemistry student (up to 200 words). A panel then decides. The 2026 round has closed. Details for the next intake appear in autumn 2026.
How realistic are your chances?
The Excellence in Chemistry Scholarship is effectively guaranteed once you hit A*AA with the A* in chemistry, so strong applicants get it automatically. The international Dean's award is much tighter: only three are given each year, and the decision rests on your written answers and grades. Apply early, once you hold your offer.
