Benefit

As a talented athlete, you will receive financial support throughout the duration of your full-time degree at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in England. There are two levels. The Elite Level awards a scholarship of £1,400 per year (about 1,650 EUR) to students who compete at regional or national level. The Podium Level scholarship exempts students competing at international level from all or part of their tuition fees, worth up to £12,500 per year (about 14,700 EUR). In addition to the financial support, all scholarship holders receive strength and conditioning training, workshops on improving sporting performance, and cover for travel and accommodation costs for agreed competitions. Podium scholarship holders also receive personalised training and sports therapy. Every scholarship holder has free access to the fitness centres on the Cambridge and Chelmsford campuses. The scholarship applies for the standard full-time duration of your studies, provided you make satisfactory academic progress.

Eligibility

• University: You have been admitted to a degree programme at ARU at its Cambridge, Chelmsford or Peterborough campuses.
• Degree level: You are enrolled on a bachelor’s degree programme or a full-time master’s degree programme. Foundation courses, advanced courses, dual training programmes, distance learning programmes and short courses (continuing professional development) are not eligible.
• Sport: You take part in competitive sports organised by the ARU, such as basketball or volleyball. Elite athletes in individual sports may be considered in exceptional cases.
• Level of competition: Regional or national level for the Elite category; national or international level for the Podium category.
• Impact: You can demonstrate that you will make a real difference to your ARU sports team or its BUCS points (BUCS is the British University Sports League).
• Nationality: Open to students from the UK, the EU and other countries.

How to apply

You should apply by email to the ARU’s Manager for Clubs and Competitive Sport, enclosing a short letter of motivation with your application in which you explain why you are suitable for the programme. Applications are accepted throughout the year, but you must apply before you start your degree. A panel of staff members will review your application, request a physiotherapy assessment from your current club if necessary, and may invite you to an interview.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is aimed at a specific group: basketball and volleyball players who already compete at regional level or higher and who can strengthen the ARU’s teams. If you clearly meet one of the two performance levels and can provide evidence of your competitive achievements, your chances are good, as only a few people qualify. Applications are accepted throughout the year; there is no fixed deadline. You should therefore apply early, before your studies begin.
