The Slade Prize is an annual award for students of fine art at the Slade School of Fine Art, which is part of University College London (UCL) in the Bloomsbury district of London. It recognises their artistic achievements and is not a monthly grant. The Slade School describes it as a small ‘semester-based’ prize, i.e. a prize awarded within the academic year. The exact amount of the prize money is not disclosed. The Slade Prizes have been awarded since the school opened in 1872.

Eligibility

• Where you study: You are a student at the Slade School of Fine Art at UCL in London.
• Field of study: You are studying Fine Art (painting, sculpture and art media).
• Nationality: Any nationality is eligible. There are no restrictions on place of residence.
• How you are chosen: The Slade Professor, who is the Director of the College, is putting you forward. There is no need to complete a separate application form.

How realistic are your chances?

You cannot apply for this prize directly. The Director of the Slade nominates the winner, and only students who are already enrolled at the Slade are eligible for the prize. It’s best to be an outstanding and dedicated art student there. The prize will then come to you naturally – rather than the other way round.
