About this scholarship

Access to Higher Education Scholarship

You will receive about 1,150 EUR (1,000 GBP) in cash each study year, which will be paid directly to you, for up to three years of full-time study at De Montfort University (DMU) in Leicester. DMU awards this grant directly to students who have entered the university via an ‘Access to Higher Education’ course. You will not receive any payment during a placement year, when you are working for a year as part of your degree programme. There are two exceptions: you will continue to receive a payment if you spend the year on an Erasmus exchange or undertake an unpaid work placement for which no other funding is available.

Who can apply

  • How you got in: You have been admitted to a DMU course for which a university entrance qualification is required. This is a college course designed to prepare adults without traditional A-levels for university study.
  • Enrolment: You are a full-time student and pay the full tuition fees (currently 9,790 GBP per year).
  • Where you're from: You are considered a domestic/UK student for the purposes of tuition fees. This does not apply to international students.
  • Field of study: Any degree programme is eligible, provided that access to higher education is an entry requirement for that programme.
  • No prior degree study: You have not yet completed a degree course, but the DMU can still assess your individual situation.
  • Not sponsored: The NHS, the probation service or any other professional body will not cover your fees, either in full or in part.

How to apply

No separate application is required. The DMU automatically identifies eligible students and will contact them before the start of the academic year.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is very narrowly defined. It is aimed exclusively at students from the UK who have been admitted to a specific degree programme at DMU via the ‘Access to Higher Education’ route and who have not previously completed any higher education. If you clearly meet these criteria, you are eligible for it. DMU awards the grant automatically, rather than selecting from a pool of competing applicants; there is therefore no competition that you need to win. The only question is whether you meet the criteria.
