About this scholarship
What you get
You will receive a one-off payment of about 1,150 EUR (£1,000), which you will never have to repay. This covers study-related costs such as books, equipment, travel expenses and study materials. The payment is a one-off payment, made exclusively in the first year, once you have fully enrolled and provided your bank details. The money comes from Bangor University in Wales.
Who can apply
- University: You are starting your first degree at Bangor University.
- Age: You will be at 25 when you start this first degree programme.
- Your background: You grew up in care (i.e. you were looked after outside your biological family) or have permanently severed ties with your family, which means you have no contact with your parents and receive no support from them.
- Field of study: Open to all subjects.
- Nationality: All nationalities welcome.
How to apply
There is no separate application form. You complete the standard application form for student finance to cover your tuition fees and living costs. Bangor University will automatically assess your eligibility based on the evidence of carers’ responsibilities or estrangement that you have submitted to your student finance office. If, instead, you receive support from NHS Wales, please contact the University directly. In this case, your status regarding care responsibilities or estrangement will not be automatically passed on.
How realistic are your chances?
This grant is very narrowly defined. You must be a first-year student who has been placed in care or has no contact with your family, under the 25 scheme, at a specific university. As a result, the group of eligible students is small, and there is no selection process. If you clearly meet these conditions and your status is registered with your student finance office, you will receive the money.
