Care Leavers' Opportunity Bursary

You will receive £3,000 per year (about 3,450 EUR) for up to 3 years. You can decide for yourself how you would like to receive this support: as a cash payment or as a reduction in your tuition fees. The scholarship is awarded by the University of Liverpool and is aimed at students who have spent time in state care.

Who can apply

• Care background: Since you were 14 years old, you have spent at least 13 weeks in the care of the local authority. This means that the local authority was legally responsible for your care.
• Age: On 1 September of the year in which you start your degree, you are 28 years old or younger.
• Level of study: You are a Bachelor’s student.
• Residence: For the purposes of student finance, the Student Loans Company classifies you as a ‘domestic’ (British) student.
• Field of study: All participants are eligible to take part.
• University: You’re studying at the University of Liverpool.

How to apply

You should apply by email to the university’s ‘Money Advice’ team. Once your place at the University of Liverpool has been confirmed, the university will contact you in August and ask you to provide evidence of your experience in child and youth welfare. This could be a letter from your support team, a relevant teacher or a social worker.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is aimed at a specific group at a specific university, so only a small number of people are eligible. If you meet the criteria regarding caregiving experience, age and being a ‘local student’, and can provide the letter of confirmation, your chances are good. As this is a funding scheme rather than a competitive award, a clearly documented justification is of the utmost importance.
